Get Out of the Bed and Have Sex

Caught your attention didn’t I?

I have three goals today:
1) Talk about the M&M girls
2) To talk about when and where do your characters get it on.
3) Pimp my newest release, HIGHLAND DRAGON.

Let’s start with the M&M girls. I am seriously thinking about moving to Georgia. :) Seriously, I love my home chapter but you gals know how to throw a party. To expand, I attended the M&M conference over the weekend and had such a wonderful time. It is true what they say about the south. You ladies are verra, verra welcoming. Of course, not everyone could get in to see Monique Patterson of St. Martins but Sally tried. She tried hard! So I just wanted to thank you all for the food, and the dancing, and the connections and the all around great fun. I’ll definitely be back! :)

Now…on to my topic: Get out of the bed and have sex!

I was doing a workshop at M&M that required me to figure out what was going to happen in the middle of my book. I thought, and humphed, and thought some more, and since I’m a pantser, I decided to just put SEX on few post it notes and move on. But all joking aside, when we write those hot steamy love scenes, are we being as creative as we can be? I know it is the emotions that keep the reader going, but don’t you sometimes want to read about how the hero and heroine just couldn’t make it to the bed?

Well, I do. When I get ready to write a love scene, I think about how I can dress it up. In fact, I even gave it a name in one of my books “Monkey-sex”. Of course that book takes place in the jungle. I’ve written sex scenes on a horse, on the rail of a ship, in a tree…

So let’s hear from you. Have you read or written a love scene that takes place outside of the bedroom. Tell us about it and what made it memorable.

OK…last goal for the day…pimpage!
Check out my award-winning novel, HIGHLAND DRAGON.Secrets and lies have a price that must be paid in blood through the generations. In medieval Scotland, Laird Calin MacLeod must choose between avenging his father's death and surrendering to the passion he finds in the arms of his enemy's daughter.

A Snippet (which takes place in a tree BTW):

He stroked her lips open with his thumb. "I have a boon or two of my own I'd like ye to agree upon before I take ye as my lady wife."

Akira remained compliant.

"Ye will allow me to kiss ye every morn..." He kissed her bottom lip. "And every eve..." He kissed her top lip. "And anytime I feel the need to press your sweet lips to mine." With this request, he tilted his head and flicked his tongue in her mouth. She jerked, but he held her firmly until she returned his kiss with equal abandon.

He forced himself away, but lingered on the pulse in her neck still beating wildly against his lips. "Will ye agree to my conditions as I have agreed to yours?" he whispered in her ear, waiting for her to catch her breath.

"'Tis all ye ask of me?"

"For the nonce."

"Do I have to return your kisses?"

"Aye." Calin nearly laughed.

"I'll do my best to honor your boon, m'laird."

Good morning, ladies!
I'm expecting to have BIG fun here today on Petit Fours and Hot Tamales! ;) After M&M, my expectations are a little higher, so someone break out the amaretto, crank up "Play that Funky Music White Boy", and let's party!!!

You are soooo funny, Kimberly!!!

Welcome to PF&HT. I have been curious about your post ever since you told me the title. THis is great!!!

I LOVE the monkey-sex comment. I'm going to have to see if I can find that book!!!

I'm finishing up school stuff, but hope to dive into Highland Dragon this weekend. I was having a tough time waiting anyway, then you gave us that blurb... Must finish tests first.... Will finish tests first... (If I keep saying this, I might make it)

Okay, now for the question. I'm not that creative on my locations (yet), so I'm going to have to be boring and say that I have written a story that EVERY time they start, someone interrupts them. And they start in a LOT of places. Heck, I was frustrated writing the damn thing, so I can only imagine their frustration.

Okay, headed to work. I'll stop back by to read comments when I get off. Have a great day!

1) Join GRW! We loved having you at M&M. You were making every editor and agents head turn with your cold read submission.

2) Elizabeth Hoyt wrote an interesting one in the Raven Prince. It was in a bedroom, but in the bedroom of a brothel... That scene made me grow up fast!

3) "Akira remained compliant." I would too! Can't wait to read it.

Thanks for stopping by PFHT and having fun with us at M&M!

Nicki Salcedo said...

And yes, you did get my attention with that blog title! :) Better than coffee...

Kimberly Killion said...

Hey Tami! Good to "see" you again! Grade those tests quickly. Calin is waiting for you. LOL

Marilyn, thanks for stopping by and reading the excerpt.

Nicki! I never thought about joining. I could be a long distance member. Do you have many of them?

And, yes, the cold reads ceratinly got me some attention. I'm working on that now... :) I will be sure to let you know how that all pans out.

Glad to help you wake up this morning.

Thanks, Kimblery--I like a woman who has goals! Oh, and thanks for the love. Nothing short of cloning Monique was going to get everyone in there.

Anyway, I'll throw mine out there. I have a couple who share a very steamy moment in a funeral home broom closet.

Enjoyed your post,

Hi Kimberly,
Thanks for the nice things you said about M&M. Hope you come back next year. Sally was terrific, wasn't she?

Yes, we have several long distance members of GRW! You are welcome.

I heard the term "monkey sex" floating around but didn't know where it came from. Talk about word of mouth! Can't think of anything special I've done with location in my love scenes. I'll have to work on that. :) Thanks for the inspiration.

Highland Dragon sounds very tantalizing...

Kimberly Killion said...

I truly felt your pain every time I saw you. At one point, you had this glazed look and I worried about you. If cloning Monique had been an option, I'm certain you would have done that. LOL

Excellent work all in all!

>>>a couple who share a very steamy moment in a funeral home broom closet.<<<
Whoa!!! Now that's creative!

Kimberly Killion said...

Yes, Linsey, you all are lucky to have such hard-working members. I'm gathering that the role of president is a much feared thing. Since I have been the pres of my chapter for a year and re-running next year, I totally understand why a person would turn tail and run from the election committee down there in Georgia.

As for the monkey sex...yes...the term does stop a reader, doesn't it? ;)

Debbie Kaufman said...

Morning Kimberly!
So glad to have you. Yes, join. I belong to other chapters, enjoy their email loops, discounts, etc.

I'm not sure how anyone is going to top Sally's funeral home broom closet sex. So far, I've just managed up against a living room wall. Oh, well. I'll work on my creativity. DH won't mind the research, I'm sure :)

#1) We DO have fun at M&M, don't we? I'm thinking of foregoing all National conferences and just sticking to the one close to home. And btw, we welcome ALL new members and think you should stay here with us, Kimberly.

#2) I hear you on dressing up the sex. Against the railing of a ship? Okay, now I have to get the book to see how that works. Which one is it? As for the first sex scene in my present WIP, it takes place in a sea cave off the coast of Kintyre, Scotland. The island actually exists and is only accessible via a causeway that appears at low tide. Don't know if anyone's ever consecrated it that way though...

#3) Am I allowed to complain to you for making me so squirmy and titillated so very early in the morning??

Kimberly Killion said...

>>>DH won't mind the research, I'm sure :)<<<

Ha! Very clever! And thanks for the warm welcome.

Kimberly Killion said...

J Perry Stone! It's the crazy pitching girl!!! I have to tell you how impressed I am with your dedication. I first saw you in Dallas. How many times did you end up pitching there anyway?

>>>Against the railing of a ship?Which one is it?<<<

Haven't sold that one yet or the monkey sex one, but I'm working on it. :)

>>>my present WIP, it takes place in a sea cave off the coast of Kintyre, Scotland.<<< OMG! You write Scottish set historicals??? Do tell...

And squirm away, but keep the titillation on the down low. I've seen you on the dance floor! LOL

Kimberly, I loved the excerpt!! I can't wait to read the book either. Bravo. great little love scene.
I'm attempting erotica right now. I guess my writing is more romantica. I'm not really into the BDSM or multiple partners thing, but I enjoy writing very, very hot, explicit love scenes, so reading your post helped me alot. I need to open my mind to new places...and positions.
Hopefully I'll do the genre justice.
Thanks so much for stopping by today.
Have a productive day,

So glad you joined us - today and at M&M. The conference was fantastic for me too, and the reg. meetings are always great fun and informative!

Kissing the Dragon sounds wonderful!

You know how to get people's attention!

Kimberly, this excerpt sounds wonderful. I'm not that far yet in HIGHLAND DRAGON, but you've teased me into reading on. Perhaps this weekend on my road trip.
My couples have had what I call "starter sex," (you know, where they get interrupted, LOL) in the kitchen, living room, couch, floor, etc. I guess I need to get them outside more. :) Only completed sex scenes have been far.

Kimberly Killion said...

Where can I get your books. :)
I'm glad my post kicked your creative juices up a notch.

Kimberly Killion said...

>>>You know how to get people's attention!<<<
Thanks Maxine! It try. *wink*

Kimberly Killion said...

"Starter sex", eh? I guess you can keep them indoors if that's the only place they can reach "finished sex". LOL
But I do love a good outdoor love scene. Bring it on!

Hello, Kimberly! Sorry for posting so late, but glad you were able to visit us here. :) And doubly glad you enjoyed M&M. You absolutely MUST join GRW. (and I get dibs on being your PAL!!)

My very first novel (written between the ages of 11 and 13) was set in the Scottish Highlands. Needless to say, they have a very special place in my heart, even though my clansmen were/are mostly from the Borders area.

Can't wait to read Highland Dragon.

And don't mind Julianne, she's squirmy all the time! LOL!

I've read many, many memorable love scenes...too many to list here, but in my current WIP, the H&H make love for the first time in an oosthouse, on a bed of hop flowers.

Come back and see us soon!

Ooooh, such an interesting topic! Here's some of the more unique locations I've read about...
Kitchen table, kitchen (& bath) counter, against a wall or door, backseat of a car, out in a field at night, out in a field during the day, on the beach (gotta watch that sand!), library desk, up against a car behind a shopping mall (I think that scene was interrupted by cop cruising by), in a greenhouse, in the woods against a tree, in the woods on the back of an atv, in a hammock, in front of a fireplace, baptizing rooms in a new house before moving in, on a patio, on a boat deck... whew!

Hey, wait a minute... some of those were personal "research" and not scenes in a book... how'd those get in there?!!?

Any how, my point of view as a reader is that having at least one scene of "non-bed" sex in a book somehow makes it just a bit more intense... they just couldn't wait to find a comfortable spot!

Pamela-reader said...

Cyrano - regarding your comment "I'm attempting erotica right now. I guess my writing is more romantica. I'm not really into the BDSM or multiple partners thing, but I enjoy writing very, very hot, explicit love scenes..."

I'd like to encourage you as a reader that your erotica offerings don't have to include either of those offerings to qualify!!

Pamela-reader said...

Kimberly - I can't wait to read Highland Dragon! My friend Linsey gave me a copy that you personally signed to me! Thanks bunches - it sounds veerra interesting!! (nope, I'm no good with the accent!)

I'd heard the term monkey sex before too... generally I've taken it to mean wild sex with no thought regarding where they are or what they were doing before the urge hit.

Kimberly Killion said...

Better late than never. Plus, I disappeared to have some beers and burgers with my sis, so blame her for the typos. :)

>>>H&H make love for the first time in an oosthouse, on a bed of hop flowers<<<

OK...color me stupid. What's an oosthouse? Is that like an outhouse and if so, ew and clever. LOL Where the bed of flowers to extinguish the smell???

Kimberly Killion said...

Wow! Wow! And Wow! I'm impressed and jealous. ;) I'm not certain how to respond to your first post, so I'll move on to your second. LOL

I'm so glad you already have your hands on the book. Yay!

And you nailed monkey sex on the head. (puns intended) :) Though it's in a different book, my characters end up in the caribbean and they monkeys are all screaming their encouragment. I thought it added a lil something. :)

OK...I've got to wrap things up here, but I had soooo much fun hanging with ya'll today.
Pease and love and Remember to Fall in Love Everyday...
